The Power of CHIP

I’ve been writing your newsletters for a few months and I’d like to officially introduce myself: Hi, my name is Brenda and I’m from Ohio. I love CHIP and I’m also a facilitator for CHIP. My passion is to help others find that better life that we all want to live and CHIP helps me do just that.  What is CHIP?  Glad you asked!

CHIP (Complete Health Improvement Program) is a series of educational videos that are a centerpiece of all the Lifestyle Medicine Solutions intensive disease reversal and treatment programs. CHIP offers you a toolkit to help you make better choices as you work towards a better life.

My own CHIP journey began in 2012 after I topped the 300 pound mark on that dreaded bathroom scale. Consequently, I began to  experience all the lifestyle related ugliness that comes with eating the standard American diet. I was taking a variety of medicines for a multitude of lifestyle related diseases. But mostly, I was living (or should that be dying?) a miserable, depressing life.

I reached that point in my life where I was starting to enjoy the inevitability of old age. Rocking chairs, increased visits with my wonderful physician, and greater contributions to the drug industry had become commonplace. Driving around parking lots until a parking place opened up close to the front door, fast food restaurants, and fighting for the aisle seat at the movie theatre became standard practice as well.

As I became more acquainted with my newly diagnosed lifestyle related diseases, nothing changed in the choices I was making. This is the way life goes, right? It’s genetic and I have no control, right? My son, who was a vegetarian at age 7, had a different idea. After many years of gentle nudging he convinced me to watch Forks Over Knives after he watched it in his high school health class. Although I thought the movie was interesting, there was no way I could or would ever reduce or give up my meat and dairy. Sound familiar?

Several weeks later, I had a heart scare and started thinking more about that movie. Shortly after that I saw a advertisement for a showing of Forks Over Knives at a pot luck by something called CHIP. My son said “Maybe we should go?”. Well if it’s a pot luck, I’m in! When we arrived, I quickly discovered this pot luck had no chicken wings, burgers or fries.

Lucky for me, we sat at a table with a local physician who spent some time talking to me. He encouraged me to try this CHIP thing. My wheels started turning and several days later, one of the local CHIP facilitators went out of her way to bring me the paperwork to sign up. Upon further investigation my employer agreed to pay half of the fee for me to go. I think someone was trying to tell me something, so I decided to sign up. Walking into that very first CHIP class (after stopping at McDonald’s for my last burger), I remember being so afraid. Mostly I was afraid CHIP would not work.

My journey into the land of CHIP has been beautiful, yet challenging at times. Since that day in March 2012, over 100 pounds have disappeared and stayed away for 6+ years. At soon to be 62 years old, I am off of all medicines-including the thyroid drugs.

Instead of waiting around to die in my rocking chair, I am now living life to the fullest! Like I mentioned in last weeks newsletter, transformation has become a way of life for me. I continue to improve over time and I know that’s something I’ll continue working on until the day I die-hopefully at a nice old age and without suffering for years with a lifestyle disease that is controllable by lifestyle choice.

As you read the newsletters, my, hope is that some of my experiences over the years will be helpful in your journey. No one said it was easy, but I am here to tell you that it is so worth it.  The life I live today is a life I could only dream about in the past.

Dreams do come true!

The End
